What is F-1 student status?

The F-1 visa is the most common visa category for international students attending US academic institutions. Your F-1 status is not the same as your F-1 visa stamp, the stamp gets you into the US, while your status is your ongoing legal standing governed by your I-20 and USCIS compliance.

Maintaining your F-1 status

To maintain valid F-1 status you must:

  • Be enrolled full-time every semester (with limited DSO-authorized exceptions)
  • Pursue a degree or program that matches what's listed on your I-20
  • Keep your I-20 valid and up to date, report changes promptly to your DSO
  • Only engage in authorized employment (CPT, OPT, or on-campus work)
  • Keep your passport valid (at least 6 months beyond your stay)
  • Report any change of address to your DSO within 10 days

I-20 basics

Your I-20 is the core document of your F-1 status. Key fields to check regularly:

  • Program start and end dates, apply for an extension before the end date arrives
  • Program of study, if you change your major, request an updated I-20
  • DSO signature, must be signed within the last 12 months if you plan to travel outside the US

Travel considerations

Before any international travel, confirm: your F-1 visa stamp is still valid for re-entry, your I-20 has a recent DSO travel signature (within 12 months), and you understand any risks if your program or status has recently changed.

When to contact your DSO

  • Changing your major, program level or expected graduation date
  • Taking a reduced course load (even temporarily)
  • Planning to transfer to another school
  • Applying for CPT or OPT
  • Receiving a job offer or internship
  • Planning international travel
  • Receiving any notice from USCIS or ICE
