University Check

Do not choose a university only because someone recommended it

Use these pages to avoid wrong-fit universities, poor recognition, misleading promises, weak ROI and agent pressure.

Quick answer

Check the country’s official government register, not the university’s own website.

Every country that hosts international students names one authority that decides recognition. The UK has the UKVI Register of Licensed Student Sponsors and the Office for Students register; Australia has CRICOS and the TEQSA National Register; Canada has the Designated Learning Institutions list; New Zealand has NZQA; the Netherlands has DUO; Spain has RUCT; Germany has Anabin. Search the institution’s legal name rather than its trading name, and for a branch campus check both the campus country and the home country of the awarding university.

Verification steps

How to check a university is officially recognised

Use this page as a pre-deposit checklist. A university can look professional online and still create risk if the campus, awarding body, refund wording or graduate pathway is unclear.

Check official recognition sources
Confirm the exact campus and awarding body
Read refund and withdrawal terms
Compare ranking claims with outcomes
Save written answers before paying
Ask UniversitySwitch if anything looks unclear

Start with the university name exactly as written on the offer letter. Then compare that name against government, accreditation, professional licensing and university-owned pages. If an agent uses a slightly different name, promises guaranteed jobs, or avoids giving written answers, slow down before sending money.

For branch campuses and pathway providers, confirm whether the final degree is issued by the overseas university, the local campus, or a partner college. This affects recognition, transfer options, employer perception and sometimes visa logic.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I check if a university is officially recognised or accredited?

Open the official register for the country the university operates in and search its legal name. Recognition is decided by that national authority — not by the university, an agent, or a ranking site. The university credibility checker names the register for 19 countries, what to search for in each, and what it means if the institution is not listed.

How do I check if a UK university is a licensed student sponsor?

Search the institution’s legal name on the UKVI Register of Licensed Sponsors (Students) on GOV.UK, confirm it holds a Student sponsor licence, and note its rating. A UK institution that is not on that register cannot issue a CAS, so it cannot support your Student visa whatever its website says. The Office for Students register separately confirms the provider is registered to award or deliver higher education in England.

Is accreditation the same as being able to sponsor my visa?

No — they are separate checks, and an institution can pass one and fail the other. Recognition means the qualification is officially recognised; sponsorship means the institution is licensed to host international students on a study visa. In Australia a provider can be CRICOS-registered for some courses and not others, and in Canada only a Designated Learning Institution can host you on a study permit — and not every DLI programme leads to a post-graduation work permit. Check the course, not only the institution.
