Day 1 CPT attracts international students because it can connect study with work from the beginning of a program. That can sound simple, especially for students who are already working, approaching the end of OPT, or transferring schools. In practice, the decision needs a careful academic, immigration and employer check. The question is not only “does the school offer Day 1 CPT?” The better question is whether the program, work, attendance, SEVIS transfer and long-term plan make sense together.

What is Day 1 CPT?
Curricular Practical Training, usually called CPT, is F-1 work authorization for training that is part of a student’s curriculum. The work must be directly related to the field of study, authorized by the Designated School Official, and shown on the student’s Form I-20 before employment begins.
Day 1 CPT is a common phrase for programs where CPT may be available from the start of the program instead of after one academic year. It is usually discussed in graduate-level programs where practical training is built into the curriculum. The “Day 1” label does not remove normal CPT rules. The work still needs to be connected to the course, the student must maintain F-1 status, and the school must authorize CPT correctly.
Is Day 1 CPT legal?
Day 1 CPT can be legal when it follows F-1 rules and the school’s curriculum genuinely requires or integrates practical training from the start. It becomes risky when the program is mainly a work-around for employment, when attendance is unclear, when the job is weakly connected to the major, or when a student starts work before CPT appears on the I-20.
Students should verify that the school is SEVP-certified, properly accredited, clear about attendance, transparent about CPT authorization, and able to explain how practical training fits the academic program. If a school or agent presents Day 1 CPT as guaranteed, automatic, or risk-free, treat that as a warning sign.
Who should consider Day 1 CPT?
Day 1 CPT is usually considered by students who need a study route that includes practical training early. Common situations include a student transferring to a new graduate program, a student whose OPT is ending, a student whose employer wants them to keep working, or a student who cannot pause practical work while studying.
That does not mean it fits every student. A student should be able to explain why the new degree is academically logical, why the work is related to the program, how attendance will be completed, and how the route affects OPT, H-1B planning, future visa applications and long-term credibility.
Day 1 CPT requirements
Requirements vary by university, but the core checks are consistent. The student needs valid F-1 status, admission to a SEVP-certified school, an eligible academic program, a job or training role related to the field of study, DSO authorization, and a CPT notation on the I-20 before work begins.

- DSO approval: CPT must be authorized by the school before employment starts.

If you are moving from one F-1 school to another, the SEVIS transfer timing matters. Your current school releases your SEVIS record to the new school. The new school then issues the transfer-pending I-20, and CPT can only begin after the new school authorizes it correctly. A gap between release date, program start date, CPT approval and employer expectations can create problems.

Day 1 CPT after OPT
Some students consider Day 1 CPT when OPT is ending or when an H-1B attempt did not work out. This is one of the highest-scrutiny situations because the new program must still be a real academic step, not only a way to keep a job. The degree should make sense after your previous education and work experience.
Also check OPT impact. If you use 12 months or more of full-time CPT at a degree level, you may lose post-completion OPT eligibility for that level. The biggest risk is treating Day 1 CPT as a shortcut instead of a regulated F-1 training benefit. Problems can appear later during visa stamping, status review, H-1B processing, green card steps, employer compliance review, or future school applications. Even when a school authorizes CPT, students should keep proof that the program and work were academically connected.

- Ignoring onsite, hybrid or residency attendance requirements.
- Relying on an agent’s claim instead of written school policy.

Red flags to avoid
Be careful if a school, agent or recruiter avoids direct answers about accreditation, SEVP certification, CPT renewal, attendance, course load or job-major connection. Be especially careful with promises that sound like guaranteed work authorization, guaranteed H-1B success, no attendance, no academic workload, or “CPT for any job.”
A legitimate decision should survive written questions. If the explanation only works in a sales call and not in official documents, slow down.
