Quick answer

Only with a work permit. Your employer applies to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) for a student training and work permit. It lasts three months, is issued in about 2 working days and carries a federal fee of AED 50; a business centre can add up to AED 72. You need a valid UAE residence visa, and if you are 15 to 18 your guardian must consent in writing (MOHRE).

After you graduate there is no post-study work visa. You may qualify for a 60-, 90- or 120-day job-seeker visa, and a job then needs an employer-sponsored work permit.

What the student permit needs

Your employer submits the application; these are the documents and conditions MOHRE lists.

  • A clear colour photo with a white background and a copy of your Emirates ID.
  • Proof that you are a student.
  • A valid UAE residence visa, if you are not a UAE national.
  • Written consent from your guardian or custodian if you are 15 to 18.
  • A medical certificate confirming you are fit for the job.
  • For training, a no-objection certificate from your school or university.
  • An employment contract approved by the Ministry and signed by you and the employer.

The employer's licence must be valid, the job must match its business, you cannot already hold a work permit, and some jobs are closed to students under 18.

After you graduate

No post-study work visa. ICP lets students stay 180 days after their study period ends (Dubai's GDRFA lists 60 days' grace after the permit ends). Top UAE graduates can apply for a 10-year Golden Visa; others may qualify for a 60-, 90- or 120-day job-seeker visa, then need an employer-sponsored work permit. UAE Government, jobseeker visit visa

What to do next

Ask your university's careers office about training placements before you look for paid work, and do not start any job until the permit is issued.
