Hungary study snapshot
Use this before you compare universities. The best destination choice depends on cost, recognition, visa readiness, housing and how the course supports your next step. Rules last reviewed September 21, 2026.
| Student route | Non-EU students need a residence permit for the purpose of studies, applied for with the admission letter, proof of funds, insurance and accommodation. |
|---|---|
| University check | Check state recognition of the institution and, for medicine, dentistry or veterinary programs, recognition by the regulator where you plan to practise. |
| Work while studying | Students can work limited hours in term time and more outside it; confirm the current limits and make sure the job is properly registered. |
| Post-study option | Graduates may be able to stay to look for work under current rules; Hungarian is needed for most local roles. |
| Cost pressure | Tuition ranges widely, with medical programs at the top, while Budapest living costs remain moderate for an EU capital. |
| Best-fit students | Students aiming for medicine or engineering in English, or for a funded place through Stipendium Hungaricum. |
City and campus realities
