Can you transfer schools on an F1 visa?

Yes — F1 students can transfer between US universities. The process is manageable when you understand the sequence and get the timing right. Crucially, transferring does not require you to leave the United States or apply for a new visa stamp, provided you maintain your status throughout.

The transfer process — step by step

  1. Choose your new school and get admitted. Apply and receive an official admission offer. Do not notify your current school until you are certain about the move.
  2. Agree on a SEVIS transfer release date. Work with your current school's DSO to choose the date they will release your SEVIS record. Once released, your current school can no longer issue documents on your behalf.
  3. Receive your new I-20. After the release date, your new school's DSO issues a new I-20 in your name.
  4. Begin classes on time. Enroll full-time at the receiving school by the program start date on your new I-20. Do not delay.
  5. Report to the new school's international office. Check in, submit documents and confirm your SEVIS record has been updated correctly.

Timing — the most critical factor

Most transfer problems happen because of poor timing. Key things to watch:

  • The SEVIS release date must fall before your program end date at the current school
  • Once released, you have a brief window to enroll at the new school — do not miss it
  • If you are between semesters, the gap must be treated as an authorized break
  • Talk to both DSOs early so the dates align cleanly — start at least 6 weeks out

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting too long to notify your current school. The release process takes time.
  • Confusing admission with a completed transfer. Getting an offer letter does not mean the SEVIS transfer is done.
  • Not checking CPT requirements at the new school. Some programs have conditions around work authorization and attendance.
  • Missing the enrollment deadline. If you miss the start date on your new I-20, your status is at risk.

What about CPT after transferring?

Your work authorization resets when you transfer. Any existing CPT from your previous school does not carry over. Your new DSO will assess your eligibility based on their program requirements and your academic progress. If you are considering a Day 1 CPT school, clarify this before selecting it.
